HAM Radio Installation

Summary

Using Radios on trips is very important for communicating to other vehicles, helping during emergency or SOS situations as well as talking to your spotter in many cases. I had a spare Yaesu 8900 quad band radio that I chose to permanently mount into Jeep Inky for convience, ease of use and not worrying about dead batteries. We also carry a smaller Baofeng handheld radio for carrying or using away from the Jeep.

The main radio is mounted under the passenger seat on the seat bracket so its out of the way and easy to maintain as needed. The head-unit is extended and mounted on the upper part of the front window. The downside of the base mount location is if the jeep gets flooded or water gets in, its possible it could get wet. I guess if this happens I will find a new location to mount it.

The other advantage of onboard mobile radios is the power. The 8900 puts out 50 watts in the VHF band so thats almost 10x most mobile radios. RANGE IS KING!
